As the great commentator David Coleman once said, goals pay the rent. Every top club across Europe is always scouring the transfer market to identify the brightest scoring talent, in the hopes of finding the next striker who will fire in 20 goals a season to help the team towards glory. It is strikers who command the highest transfer fees in the sport, as goals are the currency of football.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at five players who are the leading lights across Europe’s top leagues in terms of goals scored.
Premier League – Mohamed Salah
Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career, and already has 13 goals to his name in the Premier League. The Egyptian has been in tip-top form, and has even contributed nine assists in addition to the plethora of goals he has scored. Salah’s performances have helped Liverpool become one of the title favourites in the bet exchange on Betdaq, and there’s surely no question that he’ll be handed a new contract in the very near future.
Bundesliga – Robert Lewandowski
What more can you say about Robert Lewandowski? The Polish striker continues to hit extraordinary goalscoring heights year after year, already notching 16 strikes in the current Bundesliga season. Lewandowski has been crucial in ensuring that Bayern Munich are in firm control of the title race, bagging a brace as they defeated Borussia Dortmund recently to move four points clear. The 33-year-old may have missed out on the Ballon D’Or award, but he remains one of the best finishers in the world.
La Liga – Karim Benzema
In a similar age bracket to Lewandowski is Karim Benzema, who continues to do the business for Real Madrid at the age of 33. The Frenchman is the current top scorer in Spain’s La Liga with 12 goals, with Real Madrid establishing a strong lead at the top of the table — thanks in large part to Benzema’s scoring prowess. The striker recently suffered an injury, but thankfully for fans of Los Blancos it doesn’t seem to be too serious, so the goals can keep on flowing!
Serie A – Ciro Immobile
Year after year, Ciro Immobile continues to fire in the goals in Serie A. He may not be the first name that comes to your lips when you think of Europe’s great goalscorers, but Immobile is one of the most consistent performers in Italy, and Lazio continue to benefit from his expertise in front of goal. He has 13 goals to his name so far this season, the same as Fiorentina’s Dušan Vlahović, but crucially Immobile has played fewer matches.
Ligue 1 – Jonathan David
While Ligue 1 boasts two of the biggest stars in world football in the form of Neymar and Lionel Messi, it is Lille’s young star Jonathan David who is stealing the headlines as far as scoring goals are concerned. The 21-year-old is the league’s top scorer with nine strikes, although the French champions are languishing somewhat in the middle reaches of the table. Still, the form of Canadian is hugely impressive, and continuing it will be vital if Lille are to recover their season and qualify for the Champions League.
